How I Create Monthly Mood Boards (and Why You Should Too)

One of my favourite things to do at the start of each month is to make a mood board. It’s a simple, creative way to gather up all the ideas, colours, textures, and feelings that are inspiring me at the moment. Sometimes the theme is seasonal—like soft winter tones or spring blooms—and other times it’s based on a feeling, a word, or even a colour I can’t stop thinking about.

My Process for Crafting a Mood Board

I usually start by picking 6 to 10 images or patterns that just feel right. Then I add in some colour swatches pulled from those images, a few descriptive words, and sometimes a little quote or phrase. I put everything together on a canvas - this might be a cork board, a piece of paper, or a digital canvas (I love Canva or Procreate), and it becomes my creative guide for the month.

I also like to mix in one or two unexpected elements - a pop of bold colour, a quirky object, or a handwritten quote - to spark originality.

Why Mood Boards Are a Creative Superpower

Mood boards help me stay focused and consistent when I’m working on things like a new digital paper pack, blog post, or even just playing in my journal. They also help me get unstuck when I feel like the ideas just aren’t flowing. And honestly, they’re just fun to make.

Mood boards aren’t just pretty - they’re powerful. They help:

  • Clarify your visual direction before you dive into designing

  • Spark new ideas and combinations you might not have thought of

  • Stay cohesive across projects (great for branding or product lines)

  • Reignite your creativity when you’re in a slump

They also serve as a visual diary of your evolving style. Looking back on past boards shows how much your creative eye has grown.

Give it a go!

If you’ve never made one before, give it a go! Start with whatever is catching your eye right now—photos, colours, textures, anything. Pop them into a collage and see what comes together.

It’s a lovely way to connect with your creativity and start your month with intention.
